ABOUT THE ARTIST: My name is Rezmo, born both Diné and Mexica' from Gallup, New Mexico; of the Hona'ghaahnii Clan (One Who Walks Around Another) and the Naakai Diné Clan (Mexican Clan). An artist since I was a kid, I went to the Institute of American Indian Arts where I discovered my love of murals. I am part of an all-indigenous aerosol collective called Neoglyphix. Our stories were once carved into cave walls by our Ancestors, we are now doing the same but with spraypaint. We strive to send out a positive image of contemporary Indigenous art and knock down the misconceptions of graffiti. As an indigenous female from the reservation I found my voice through graffiti.
Members of my immediate family that live on and off the Navajo Reservation have tested positive for Covid-19, so many people on our reservation share the same story. My design for our Hanes T-Shirt Campaign was inspired by our resilience, strength, hope, faith, rebuilding and survival of our people. We use Tadidiin (Corn Pollen) in prayer to communicate with our Ancestors, that is why it is being sprinkled onto the Earth in prayer and in blessing. Through prayer, hope and compassion we can get through this together. This image as a whole is about healing. Healing our minds, our bodies, our earth and our spirits. I drew this keeping in mind and heart, my grandparents, my family, and people.
