Moon Dust & Scavengers

By Adam Lewis |

To say that Lexington is famous for polo probably isn't quite right, but it is played here more than most places and when it is it's exactly what you'd expect: a lot of bowtied bartenders and convertible coupes, white linen blowing in the wind while dudes named Chet sip Double Oaked Woodford and girls lugging around giant Coach bags filled with nothing tamp down divots in the turf.

But this week is different.

This week, maniacs from all over the world on teams with names like Rat Queen, Ninja 5, Scavengers, and Moon Dust will invade Coolavin Park for the 8th World Hardcourt Bike Polo Championship, the biggest and most competitive bike polo tournament in the world.

Proudly sponsored by Kentucky for Kentucky and hosted by the Lexington Bike Polo League, the WHBPC Tournament is a first for Lexington, which is home to the first city parks-sanctioned hardcourt bike polo courts in the United States.

The North American Club Bench Championships and North American Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships were held here in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Check out the WHBPC madness in person this week, October 3-7, at Coolavin Park on the corner of West 6th & Jefferson in Lexington. Or stream the event live online. A full schedule and additional info can be found here.
