Liberty Hall, Frankfort – Haunted Mansion in Kentucky

Built in 1796 by Senator John Brown, Liberty Hall is one of Kentucky’s most famous haunted homes. Spirits said to linger here include Margaret Varick, the infamous “Gray Lady,” who died after traveling 800 miles to a funeral. Her ghost, always dressed in gray, still wanders the mansion, opening and closing doors. A Spanish opera singer who vanished in 1805 and a forlorn soldier in uniform are also among the ghostly figures in Frankfort, Kentucky. Visitors today continue to report eerie sightings and mysterious activity.

Kentucky State Penitentiary, Eddyville – Haunted Prison

Known as the “Castle on the Cumberland,” the Kentucky State Penitentiary opened in 1886 and remains the oldest prison in the state. Its Gothic design is striking, but behind the walls lurk countless ghost stories. Executions, disease, and brutal conditions left behind restless souls. Once a bustling military camp, Camp Taylor was devastated during the tuberculosis epidemic. Bodies were said to be stacked in buildings, and today residents report seeing ghostly soldiers marching in formation. Other spirits include a Victorian woman in blue and a mysterious young girl. Many consider Camp Taylor to be one of the most haunted neighborhoods in Kentucky.

Old Talbott Tavern, Bardstown – Haunted Tavern

Built in 1779, the Old Talbott Tavern is one of the oldest in Kentucky and a hub of paranormal activity. Jesse James himself is said to have fired his gun at a ghost here, leaving bullet holes still visible today. Guests continue to hear footsteps, voices, and see apparitions, making it a staple of Bardstown’s haunted history.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Louisville – Haunted Hospital

Perhaps the most famous of all haunted places in Kentucky, Waverly Hills Sanatorium was once a tuberculosis hospital where thousands died. Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville – Haunted Cemetery
